German automaker, BMW, showed many concepts which were supposed to show the look of the brand new i8 model without a roof and the automaker has always openly talked about an open-top version. The latest spy photos revealed the all new 2018 BMW i8 Spyder testing on the snowy roads of Sweden.
The convertible was spotted in Sweden with a fine set of new wheels. The test mule has a very short removable top that slopes off sharply into a long rear end.
The prototype ditches the coupe’s rear glass, and nacelles run behind the seats instead. A heavy camouflage covers the entire exterior of this prototype. It’s possible that an adequate concealment might be needed because it is a refreshed body for the i8.
According to some reports last year, the redesigned 2018 BMW i8 Spyder is supposed to go on sale sometime this year. Aside from the exterior changes, the brand new hybrid sports car will come with additional 15hp. That means that the complete output of the engine will increase to 372 hp.
In addition, a battery might also be updated, but that is not confirmed as of the moment. The current model features a 7.1 kWh pack, while the model of the i8 that does safety work for Formula E has a 10kWh.
Everyone has been waiting for an i8 convertible for a long time now, and speculations have indicated that it was delayed because of engineering setbacks. One of the challenges of the automaker could have been adding rigidity to the carbon fiber-reinforced plastic body shell.
Some new spy photos also reveal that BMW is putting a revamped i3 to the tests. Even though the automaker is doing an excellent job when it comes to covering their test vehicles and prototypes, it appears that the new i3 will come with a customized front bumper. Expect also to see a sporty i3 within the lineup, which will have more power and improved suspension.
The new 2018 BMW i8 Spyder is anticipated to make its debut by next year. However, pricing details are still unknown.
