Sheer muscle and brute strength: two of the most important requirements for a killer off-roader. The 2017 Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 and 2017 Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro are two off-roaders known to bring in that punch and more. At one point, industry experts may even find it difficult to determine which one is the best, but a decision has to be made.

It is highly understandable how this battle is considered tough. Both Colorado ZR2 and Tacoma TRD Pro are two of the best and are able to offer more than what is expected according to experts. However, it is also interesting to find out which among the two offers more and become the eventual winner.

According to Motor Trend, the 2017 Chevrolet Colorado ZR2’s suspension system is noteworthy and a cut above the rest. It is equipped with Dynamic Suspension Spool Valve dampers which are originally made for the race track. The Chevrolet Camaro Z/28 was the first mass-produced car to have the DSSV dampers. Not to be outdone, the 2017 Tacoma Toyota TRD Pro combines coil springs from the TRD parts catalog and Fox shocks up the front and leaf springs.

The 2017 Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 comes with 308-horsepower 3.6-liter V-6 while the 2017 Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro has 3.5-liter six-cylinder enough to produce 278-horsepower which is considerably less than that of ZR2’s. However, in terms of acceleration, the TRD Pro is better as it did zero to 60 mph in 7.1 seconds. It slightly bested the Colorado ZR2 by mere 3 seconds!

Pulling power or towing capacity is of the essence too. The Colorado ZR2 is capable of producing 369 pound-feet of torque while the TRD Pro is only capable of 265 pound-feet of torque. Power is necessary for any off-roading vehicles, so Chevrolet ZR2 has the complete advantage.

Chevrolet also made more effort to steer clear and away from any road hindrances encountered while off-roading. It is known that both Colorado ZR2 and Tacoma TRD Pro are on lifted suspensions, however, Colorado ZR2 has revised front and rear bumpers. This makes for an even better off-roading performance apart from its usual suspension.

As added by Torque News, 2017 Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro has an answer to Colorado’s revised bumpers. It is equipped with Crawl Control. It assists the truck to get out of being stuck in the sand or driving off a ledge. However, it is considered a not-so-interesting feature. Industry experts find it rather usual.

In several aspects, the 2017 Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 has bested the 2017 Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro. However, it is important to note that Tacoma TRD Pro is also a solid off-roading mid-size truck which can easily beat other competitors in the market. It may not have done fairly well with the Colorado ZR2 but it is still one of the best off-roading trucks, no doubt about it. See if the video below agrees with the experts.
